Texas GIS Community Meeting Recap - 2nd Quarter, 2015

The GIO hosted the 2nd GIS Community meeting for calendar year 2015. Approximately 32 guests representing state, local, and federal government agencies were in attendance.

TPWD logo and link to website Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) – Kim Ludeke

A portion of the State Wildlife Grant will be used to acquire scanned Tobin historic orthophoto diapositives from P2 Energy Solutions. The imagery will cover the Blanco River watershed, along with some areas along the lower Brazos and Guadalupe Rivers. Additional areas may be acquired if money and interest are there. Although the imagery will be delivered in digital format, the challenge of georeferencing the imagery remains. The data are copyrighted but TPWD has obtained permission from P2ES to share with other State agencies and State universities as long as they honor the copyright.

Adding new layers and capabilities to TexMap for Troopers.

Testing and deployment now complete for new mobile application that will streamline business process for GLO to permit structures along the coast and in state waters such as piers and other assets. Working on updates to the Priority Coastal Habitat Areas through a contract with Freese & Nichols that will go into the Oil Spill Response Toolkit. A presentation on the Toolkit will be on the agenda for the next GIS Community meeting.

SDC will host the Texas Demographic Data User Conference May 19-20, 2015 in Austin, TX. Richard Wade will give the keynote presentation during lunch on Wednesday, May 20.

Updating the Historical Coal Mine Database (HCMD) with underground mines. This will have significant impact on development in places like Bastrop and Athens, as well as prove valuable for safety. More updates will be provided at the next GIS Community Meeting.

TNRIS Project Updates

The 2014-2015 Texas Orthoimagery Program (TOP) – Gayla Mullins

The 0.5-meter imagery acquisition is delayed due to weather and military airspace restrictions but collection will continue. Weekly updates can be viewed at the 2015 Statewide Orthoimagery Project page. Gayla extended an invitation to anyone interested in assisting with the QC of the imagery using the online Client Product Acceptance Tool (CPAT) provided by Surdex, the orthoimagery provider. For more information or to participate, please fill out and submit the form located on the project Quality Control page.


Texas NAIP 2014 Availability – Gayla Mullins

The 1-meter Compressed County Mosaic MrSID files and DOQQ JPEG2000 files are now available for download through the TNRIS Data Download. The DOQQ GeoTIFFs are also available at TNRIS through our custom ordering form.

Brazos County and the City of Palestine 6-inch Orthoimagery Project – Gayla Mullins

Brazos County is once again flying orthoimagery for their county. New to the project is the City of Palestine who will also receive 6-inch orthoimagery. Although this project is not associated with the 2014-2015 TOP project, Surdex was selected as the imagery provider as well. This is the third year that Brazos County has participated in obtaining imagery through the High Priority Imagery and Data Sets contract.

Update on Brazos county LiDAR acquisition. Project is in the Pilot stage.


Google Imagery for Texas – Felicia Retiz

We now have over 100 unique links distributed to pilot participants. A move to Google Cloud Platform technology will take place over the next 30 days which will allow for faster loading, printing, and imagery updates.
